Mashup
Here is a list I put together of some of the key players in the tiny house movement (in alpha order):
- Kent Griswold founded the Tiny House Blog and blogs there full time.
- Michael Janzen blogs at Tiny House Design, Tiny Free House, Tiny Pallet House, Tiny House Living…
- Gregory Johnson founded the Small House Society in 2002, built his mobile hermitage and wrote Put Your Life on a Diet.
- Lloyd Kahn is founding editor-in-chief of Shelter Publications, author of a forthcoming book on tiny houses, and blogs at lloydkahn.com.
- Brad Kittel owns a salvage shop and is the man behind Tiny Texas Houses.
- Jay Shafer is the designer and advocate who started the Tumbleweed Tiny House Company (he built his first house in 1997) and author of the Small House Book.
- Tammy Strobel‘s online home is rowdykittens.com where she produces the Simple Living News Update and sells her e-book Simply Car-Free.
- Dee Williams built her 84 square foot house and has lived in it since 2004. She started a company called Portland Alternative Dwellings and hosts building workshops.
And some more newcomers on the scene (new to me, that is):
- Derek Diedricksen blogs at Relaxshax and self-published his illustrated Humble Homes book.
- Jeff Hemsley & Arlene downsized, built their Mini-Mobile Cottage and towed it up to Seattle where they now live.
- Peter King is an experienced carpenter and offers workshops at Vermont Tiny Houses.
- Ryan Mitchell blogs at The Tiny Life and produces Tiny House Live!
- Alex Pino blogs at Tiny House Talk, Tiny House Lover, and Tiny House Living.
- Kevin Rose and Marian Carter designed & built a tiny house and blog at Building Gypsy Rose.
And here is what they’ve been writing about lately:

Less is More Sustainable
Ancient Inspirations
I’ve been noodling all week about what form a sustainable tiny house city might take. While my recent online wanderings into the city planning of Black Rock City got me started on this quest, its overall design is really geared for the week-long Burning Man event. Models for truly sustainable cities would need to focus [...]Ancient Inspirations is a post from: Tiny House Design© 2010 Tiny H...
Black Rock City Inspiration
At this very moment 50,000 people have setup housekeeping in a temporary city in the Nevada desert. If you don’t know much about the Burning Man Project you might find it surprising that this temporary city (Black Rock City) has an incredibly well thought out plan designed by architect Rod Garrett. This year the art theme [...]Black Rock City Inspiration is a post from: Tiny House Design© ...
Dan’s Tiny House Project plans now available
Dan’s Mom had been living in a badly constructed trailer home that was deteriorating around her. Like most of us these days money was tight, so Dan began researching frugal housing options and discovered the tiny house movement. Inspired by the tiny homes he found online, and having some experience building stuff, Dan came up with [...]Dan’s Tiny House Project plans now available is a...

KCI Roofing
Metal or asphalt shingles – that is the question. The reality is I’ll probably only be moving this place twice in my life, so shingles are an option. The problem is they’ll need venting, and that’s not a super attractive look. OTOH, I haven’t ordered the metal, and minimum it will take 10 days plus [...]
KCI Torrential rains
Denny and Aaron added more flooring to the loft. I am happy, my tall husband will be even happier. They also got the final roofing truss up, because that night the torrential rains came down. The rain lasted about four hours; fortunately there was only a wee bit of water in the place. It was easily [...]Subscribe to RowdyKittens

How to Prepare for a Vagabonding Adventure
If you’ve dreamed of seeing the world, go vagabonding! Vagabonding involves taking an extended break from “normal life” to travel the world. “…beyond travel, vagabonding is an outlook on life. Vagabonding is about using the prosperity and possibility of the information age to increase your personal options instead of your personal possessions.” ~Rolf Potts Within [....

Tiny House Book Mojo
Professional book packagers would be aghast at the way I put together a book. Assemble material (photos and text) for over a year, store in file folders, then at certain point pull best material out and begin laying out a spread -- 2 pp. at a time. Random, no order. No plan or outline, no idea how things will fit together; just here the requirement that shelters be under 500 sq. ft. It's a wild mi...

Roadkill Deer/Window-Bashed Quail/Homemade Bread/Wailing Souls
Yesterday I was driving over to a doctor's appointment (MRI scan of left knee). I spotted a dead fawn on the road along the lagoon. I didn't have much time. Parked, found the little critter, although stone dead, still warm. Tossed him in back of truck, got a bag of ice, did my over-the-hill chores, came home and gutted, skinned, and cut up the carcass into chunks which are now aging in the pantry ...

This Gypsy Wagon is a Mobile Spa and Sauna
This Gypsy Wagon is a spa and sauna on wheels. Yeah, a mobile spa! What does this have to do with tiny houses? Well for one… It’s just cool. But if you ever think about tiny house communities like I do, you know that extra facilities would be really useful for the residents. And in [...]
Camping Cacoon is like a Mini A-Frame
Derek I think you’re going to like this one. It’s sort of a mini A-frame house. Anyways it definitely makes an awesome little cabin for camping, playing music, hanging out, or whatever. Like lots of the other really small structures I’ve featured here, it can be used as an office or hobby room too. On [...]
An Office In The Middle Of The Forest
An architecture firm named SelgasCano designed their very own office in the middle of the forest. I can barely describe how awesome I think this is. What an inspiring place to do your work, art, writing, music, or to live. This is not a backyard office, it’s the real office of the architecture firm Selgas [...]

An Update on the Garden
This being only my second attempt at gardening, I think that it's going quite well. In a previous post on gardening I listed what I was going to plant. Almost everything grew like weeds. The photos were taken on May 25 and June 27. I did have a couple of problems though. Bell pepper, corn and cucumber seeds never sprouted. And I bought bell pepper and basil plants, but the things aren't growing, t...
An Analysis of the Tiny House Blog Network
Do you have a tiny house blog? When you write something, how many people read it? One way to make a guess at how many folks read it is how many folks comment on it. But if 3 people comment on it, dose that mean only 3 people read it? No. Generally, more people read than comment. How about followers? Maybe you have statistics that say 40 or so folks "follow" your blog. So does that mean 40 people re...
The next project is the drapes
Now that I've painted, I've figured out what I want to do for drapes. I was looking for a woven material so we'd let in lots of air and light. At night we can close the honeycomb blinds for added privacy and darkness. What we have hanging now is liner material, like bleached muslin, scavenged from some old drapes. Yesterday I bought off-white burlap for the drapes and oatmeal colored linen-like rib...

Update On Asheville Tiny House
Several weeks back I covered a Tiny House in my neck of the woods, Asheville, North Carolina. I wanted to follow up and show some of their progress. Burstner Trailer
Here is a pretty interesting travel trailer, while it is pretty expensive (originally posted on the blog “Born Rich”), but the design concepts are neat and could be re-created. One feature I really like is the bathroom. The shower stall folds out around the person. The floor has a drain and when not in use, [...]

Pet Fort/Home with an adult tiny house/doghouse twist?
‘Been building these kinda things for quite some time, but saw this one a ways back in Readymade Magazine- and the version had a cool, green, rainwater-collecting, and gardening, twist. The list of materials to built it- all name brand, high-end, this and that- was just ridiculous though, especially for an OUTDOOR pet house. Regardless, [...]
