Here’s a little shack I found in a collection of photos of American vagabonds. I saw these pictures a few years ago, but only just now found out they are the work of Mike Brodie. And I’m entranced.

Here is an excerpt from Needles and Pens Gallery, where he had a show back in 2007:
Mike Brodie aka “The Polaroid Kidd” is a somewhat accidental documentary photographer. By photographing his friends, their homes, and lifestyles, Brodie has captured a marginalized segment of the American population that’s not so prevalent in main stream society. His haunting photos of hobos, punks, and squatters criss-crossing the country in boxcars are reminiscent of Horace Bristol’s Grapes of Wrath era pics that captured migrant workers on their way to California ….except now they have facial tattoos. They’re truly amazing.
On a separate note, I just stumbled upon Aimless, part road movie part investigative journalism, a travel documentary about wandering in the US. Good luck to you Ryan!

That’s some interesting stuff. I wish we could know more about what they’re doing, how they got in that situation, and what their plans/hopes are. Bananas and Tabasco sauce, yummy. Mike Brodie’s photography is pretty powerful though. I mean, those people’s situations are.
Hi Alex! Yes, those photos have inspired many comments over the years. To me it looks like interesting people with interesting stories. Nice to be able to wake up in the morning and decide what you’re going to do with your time. Freedom…
GREAT lookin’ cabin- with TONS of character- something you don’t get in tract-house, cookie cutter neighborhoods (also, no mortgage!). What a cool little place….thanks for posting it Hillary= and thanks for adding me to your mish-mash list of tiny living sites- I appreciate it
No lack of character that’s for sure.
