Underground Schoolbus

This picture has been floating around the internet for some time and I haven’t found any attribution info. It has been called a “redneck” root cellar and a bomb shelter. With a little more natural light you could call it a subterranean home. Or, you could grow marijuana. (The sheriff was impressed.)

I’ve seen this photo many times in the group of “redneck” photos that floats around. I’ve actually wondered where this was, and personally I think it is an ingenious way to create a storm shelter! I think this opens an entire realm of possibilities. :)

I’m pretty sure this is the home of my ex-husband’s sister down in the New Braunfels, TX area. And it isn’t the only house in the area with a bus buried for an underground shelter / storage area. I know for sure the house next door has one, too, although without the nice concrete entry area. Just wooden steps leading down to it. Apparently this was a popular use for used up school buses at one time. We have a lot of high winds, tornadoes, and hail around here. so people really like to have shelters underground and that aren’t under their houses. They’ll get an old, used bus towed to the property and then just bury it. There’s even some guy that has like 30 of them buried on his farm and outfitted to be a shelter when the end of the world hits.
