This photo captures something I find so beautiful about human-scaled buildings. The subjects are Oso and Benito doing work on a 120 square foot straw bale/clay building. It was part of a week-long straw bale building workshop that just took place in southeastern Arizona, hosted by the Canelo Project and taught by Athena and Bill Steen. The house, “allowable under building code without a permit,” was built for friends Jon Bolin and Shelly Eversole. More photos on Bill’s blog.

hey there…
i was perusing your site and some of the others similar to (i.e., cottage cob), and was wondering if you had a resource for determining which type of alternative house building material would be good for southern colorado (say, in the san luis valley, sangre de cristo mtn range)? i am trying to do my best to get out of debt, buy some land, and build my own house over time. also, anything about electricity (on/off the grid) and plumbing (from a water tank…? pressure?). thank you for the inspiration!
Hi, wondering where this is located. I will be visiting Phoenix next week and would like to tour west coast natural buit homes.
