The people that I knew in NYC with tiny kitchens/apartments, had pieces that worked for a multitude of purposes. For example, knives. You don't need a whole knife set if you have two maybe three knives that can do everything you need. A cutting board that fits across the sink also serves as a drying rack.

I always like functional pieces that are beautiful enough for display, like mixing bowls that are hand tossed serving pieces and mugs and glasses that can double as vases.

Most of the things that Joe loves and covets we don't need to cook stuff. It might make it easier, but often we have three gadgets that do very similiar things. I tend to think that most chefs have certain things that are indispensable and couldn't cook without and a love for specialized gadgets that make it easier to do very specific things.

Loved the NYT article and especially the photos!

The best resource I've seen for what a serious cook would want in a tiny kitchen is at Smitten Kitchen, one of my favorite food blogs. She has a list of items (http://smittenkitchen.com/2009/12/build-your-own-smitten-kitchen/) and tips on how to maximize your space (http://smittenkitchen.com/2008/11/how-to-max-out-your-tiny-kitchen/).
