Lloyd Kahn is not just the publisher of several books, he is a true DIY craftsman and countercultural icon of the 60s era, profiled in this 7 minute documentary. At age 74, I’m so happy that he’s still skateboarding and blogging… with a new tiny house book on the way that I’m super excited about.
One of my faves on the bookshelf is Builders of the Pacific Coast, featuring a bunch of (probably un-permitted) houses built by hippies. They are truly works of art.
The book was made into a poster, and this poster is the first ThisTinyHouse giveaway (as I begin yet another process of downsizing). If you comment on this post, you could win the loverly poster and put it up somewhere in your loverly home.

As an old hippie myself, my first home was a hand-built, off-grid (unpermitted!) A-frame I built in the woods outside Eugene, OR. These pictures bring back memories!
I have been a huge fan of Lloyd Kahn for years. I bought his first building book at a used book sale 20 years ago, and have bought every book he has published since. I love his blog – there is always something interesting and fun.
I follow Lloyd’s blog and have his Shelter books, he’s amazing.
Sure does remind me of my early days … wow – I am not 71 but am 66 and do well remember my first time ‘little house’ when times were indeed fun.

Thanks for sharing. Lloyd Kahn offers such a holistic, relaxed approach to self-sustainability. Breath of fresh air.
I love the poster, and your blog, mi friend Era (http://eraseveraseera.blogspot.com/) and I always look at it an dream….
Hello! I’ve been enjoying reading your site. Now I’m off to check out Lloyd Kahn!
I read your blog and some other tiny house blogs, which allow me to daydream about the tiny house I will build myself if I ever had a place to put it. Thanks for even more inspiration!
Love your blog. Currently living in 10×15 studio and always looking for ways to make life a little less cluttered and more livable. I dream of having my own tiny house (and a few chickens) some day.
He is so very inspiring. Watching him makes me realize I have so much more life to live.
This book reminds me of my great aunt and uncle, two hog farmers who built their own little farmhouse in the 1920s and lived out the rest of their days in it. It still stands, with some upgrades and fixes from my cousin, who lives there now. They and Lloyd Kahn inspire my dreams of building my own tiny house someday.
Congratulations Miranda! You won the contest! Shoot me an email with your address and I’ll ship off the poster ASAP.
