I once grew potatoes in my compost bin. I was using a bushel basket. Eventually the bottom rotted out, which was a good thing, I could just lift it up and pull out the ready compost to be incorporated into my flower beds. After being out of town for about a week, I came home to find plants growing in my compost bin. They were potato plants, growing from the potato peels I'd put in the compost. I started a new compost bin and let that one sit. When Fall rolled around I had a nice little crop of potatoes.
