Our cheap-o composting project worked! After our small bin got full Michael and I basically ignored it for four months. (Now we are freezing our compostables.) I uncovered the bin today to discover fresh, non-smelly compost. I could not identify any solid food matter except for a couple of eggshells.
A friend told me about a peace garden nearby that gladly accepts compost so I will be making a deposit shortly.
Our tomato project, on the other hand, was not so successful. The morning glories overtook our poor little tomato plants and the soil wasn’t the best to start out with. We do, however, have some amazing tomatoes from our local CSA that have been satisfying our need for local tasty heirloom tomatoes.
Next project will have to be more portable gardening… I love this idea.

I once grew potatoes in my compost bin. I was using a bushel basket. Eventually the bottom rotted out, which was a good thing, I could just lift it up and pull out the ready compost to be incorporated into my flower beds. After being out of town for about a week, I came home to find plants growing in my compost bin. They were potato plants, growing from the potato peels I’d put in the compost. I started a new compost bin and let that one sit. When Fall rolled around I had a nice little crop of potatoes.
Great post. I wanted to let you know that I linked to your post from the “Tiny-House-of-Chaos” projects at my blog; blog.chinakrysdarrington.com to show how other people in the Tiny House movement are doing their thing. Hope you had a most excellent time at Burning Man this year.
Keep up the most excellent work.
