Smallest Coolest 2009

April 8, 2009

Over at Apartment Therapy I’ve been enjoying this year’s Small Cool contest, highlighting good design in small spaces. So far there are only 5 contestants in the “teeny-tiny” category, defined as 300 square feet or less. Head on over there and vote, or better yet, enter. I would absolutely love to see more unconventional homes in this list.

2couch_bedfinal_rect540While there are so many beautiful spaces competing this year, my favorite entry so far is, of course, the smallest entry. Two adults and two dogs live in an Upper West Side Manhattan apartment of 240 square feet. They were able to fit everything in the apartment except their bikes. That is no small feat. Check out their neat design solution with the modular couch in front of the queen size murphy bed.rv_livingrm_rect5401

Another couple plus 2 pets entered their RV home into the contest, totaling 336 square feet. I like that they ripped most everything remotely RV-ish and created a nice looking space for themselves.

On a personal note, my own apartment was featured in AT’s first Small Cool contest way back in 2005. I lived in my 186-square-foot studio apartment in Harlem for more than a year. Now I’m feeling nostalgic…
