There’s been discussion of using shipping containers in tiny house villages.
It’s being done beautifully in Amsterdam.
Keetwonen, completed 3 years ago, continues to be the largest shipping container community in the world, with 1000 units as student housing.

Be sure to check out this YouTube video and take a tour in French and Dutch.
Amenities include (from the company’s website):
- your own bathroom and kitchen
- separate sleeping and study room
- balcony
- large windows for enough daylight
- high speed internet
- 50 liter hot water tank
- automatic ventilation system with variable speeds
- centralized heating through natural gas boiler
- centralized phone system at the main front door
- closed off internal area for safe bicycle parking
Myself and others are eager to do something like this in the states. If you have any ideas for location, join the village forum and tell us about it.
Also in Amsterdam: NDSM Werf, a former shipyard turned center for underground culture. It includes facilities for theater, performing arts, a skate park and other public events.

I love them, especially the clean lines. I hope I can see them in person someday.

What a wonderful idea!
This is an ingenious repurpose done at a larger scale. Design is a part of life in Amsterdam. Therefore, I am not surprise that the container building also looks good. A project that is worth spreading.
It’s practical idea to use shipping container as a house and live where ever you want.
We recently had the opportunity to visit with Dwellbox, a container home builder in Boone, NC. Here is a link to our blog!
