Michael and I have decided to grow tomatoes this year. We went through a catalog and ordered 10 different kinds of heirloom tomato seeds from our favorite seed company whose mission is to help preserve rare and endangered plant species.
The seeds arrived quickly and sat on our to-do list until last week when I found myself in the coolest nursery I’ve ever been to: sprawling acres of exotic plant life, pleasant water features, and a neat bin where you can dig for worms.
I must’ve seemed lost because a woman came up to me and said, “Is this your first time?” She quickly pointed me towards the shelf of growing kits and explained how easy it was. Easy gardening? I was sold. Standing behind me in line was another woman who informed me that Bill, the owner, grows 90% of his own food here. (That explains the chicken coop and fish farm out back.) I am so happy places like this exist.
So… we dutifully poked our little seeds into these cute little starter pellets, watered lightly, and viola! Six days later, our first sprout! (Pictured above. An Eva Purple Ball, in case you were wondering.) I’ll keep you updated on our progress.
