My secret to living with less

April 5, 2009

website_grandma_gatewoodThe Small Living Journal has just published an article of mine where I introduce my (not so) secret to living with less.

In the article I also introduce one of my favorite heroes, Grandma Gatewood. She was the first and the oldest woman to hike the entire Appalachian Trail (2,168 miles). She wore a pair of Keds sneakers and carried an army blanket, a raincoat, and a shower curtain/tarp. That was in 1955. Read more.

About seven years ago my husband and I spent a month hiking the Appalachian Trail. It was so amazing! To have everything you need on your back, going through the mountains like that, was incredibly liberating.

That experience was our first introduction to living with less. And, it was fabulous. It’s so apparent when you’re out there that you really can live and be happy without a lot of “stuff”. We realized how truly important people were: sitting around a campfire, roasting marshmallows, snuggling into our tent…these things were so simple. And yet they had their own routine and beauty that our “home life” doesn’t really have.

We’re on our way back to that state of being. Thank you for such a wonderful article! It brought back a lot of great memories.
