100 villagers in 5 weeks

Over at Tiny Village Blog, I am celebrating the first hundred charter members in the village network. It’s still hard for me to believe all this happened in 5 weeks! Here are some numbers I gathered:

  • 61 of our members live in 1000 square feet or less
  • 30 of our members live in 500 square feet or less
  • 17 of our members own a portable tiny home
  • Many of our members are in the process of downsizing
  • 22 of our members currently own rural property
  • 54 of our members would like to own land

In case you’re just tuning in for the first time, I’m trying to build a real village for people with tiny houses, which is remarkably difficult to do in the U.S. due to the bloated housing industry, distorted municipal codes and unnecessary zoning laws.

Ironically, there are often strict regulations to prevent people from living or even spending the night in the Swedish garden “houses”.

What do you do if your spouse refuses to live in a Small house?

Thoreau said, “I have learned, that if one advances confidently in the direction of his dreams, and endeavors to live the life he has imagined, he will meet with a success unexpected in common hours.”

But what do you do if you’ve married someone for life who consistently gets in the way of your dreams?

I’ve asked the question to several small house enthusiasts, and most say you have to compromise. But a 1200 square foot house it not my dream.

Any help?

Hi Eric,
I don’t have much advice on this topic… but it sounds to me like you answered your own question.

EJ – You’ve piqued my curiosity. So what are these structures used for?

Who is this man (or woman) behind the curtain? I joined Tiny House Village but I like this forum better.

I’m interested in getting involved with a tiny house village like the one above in Portland. Is this really happening? What about codes and restrictions?

Hi Amy,
There is no one behind the curtain. I set up the Tiny House Village Network as an online community for discussion about developing real communities. The rest is up to you. There are a number of logistical issues like housing code, zoning, etc. that are discussed in the THV forums.
