Plywood shopping
We put the floor in and I’m really impressed with the results. It’s basically a 10 foot piece of nice exterior grade plywood ($62.97) with some semi-gloss water-based varnish ($13.97). Sourcing the plywood turned out to be an adventure, as this sort of thing is generally only used in boats. I had no idea just how many varieties of plywood there are… there’s the quality and type of wood, the size and thickness, even the adhesive used. I’ve become a friend of the local lumber yard, and, somewhere along the way, vowed not to shop at Homedepot anymore.

I’ve been thinking and rethinking about what to do with the interior walls… which is slowing down the renovation, obviously.
Oh, and somehow I managed to get $30 for the trailer fridge by advertising it on Craigslist. A woman named Lashadori picked it up for her brother’s dorm room. Cheers, boys!
We leave for our Mexico trip on Thursday (five days at this hot springs canyon in Baja) and my brother comes to visit upon our return. I’m excited to see him, but I had hoped the trailer would be inhabitable for him. Maybe the upstairs spare bedroom won’t be such a let down after all.

Hello,
Reading your blog on the Compact renovation. Will you please tell me what thickness plywood you used for the floor? I blogged 1/2″ was used originally. My Compact had 3/4″ floor. Did you go with 1/2″, or 3/4″ floor update? If you used 1/2″, can you comment on how it holds up structurally?
Thank you,

Hi Cliff –
We used 1/2″ ply. We’re two small people. This might not work for a heavier person, but it seems to be okay for us. We also bolted it into the frame (as before) and placed some shims underneath in between the frame and the ply so it’s pretty tight. I hope you’ll be able to make it to the meetup next week so you can see for yourself.
