One tiny house visits another
It seems to be always raining whenever we’re in Sebastopol. On Monday we rolled into the soggy town to visit my friend Jay Shafer of Tumbleweed Tiny House Company. Due to the rain, no photos were taken of this momentous afternoon, but here is a picture of Jay and his own tiny house.
Over lunch we caught up about life and I told him more about my little trailer project. After giving him the nickel tour of our abode, we got some great suggestions about how to finish the interior. (Right now it’s a mess of glue and insulation.) Because Jay remodeled an Airstream trailer in his early days of tiny house living, he has particular insight about condensation which we had been having issues with during these past few rainy days.
Surprisingly, Jay said that our Compact Jr. trailer is very similar to the one he traveled in with his family as a kid in Southern California. They had built 2 bunks above the regular bunks where he and his sister slept. It must’ve been a larger model — I can’t imagine fitting 2 kids and 2 adults in our trailer!
On a side note, Jay will be coming out with the re-designed new edition of his original Small House Book. I strongly recommend this tiny, concise book for anyone who is interested in small house living.

OH! We traveled with two adults and two kids and the ‘71 Compact Jr. Trailer. It was FANTASTIC! (And fantastically crowded.) When all four of us slept in the original bed, we were like wieners on the BBQ – one rolls and they all roll! No way bunks would fit in our model unless we removed the windows (or just put the bunks against the window), and if we had them, no way I’d sleep that way…we’re cramped, but comfortable. If we were bunked, we’d be too cramped, even for me!
I was looking for cheap houses when i stumbled upon this. These are so tiny and perfect. Im used to living in small spaces. I live with my mom , and i reside in the basement which i have partially finished. It has a very small livingroom, tiny kitchen, and small bedroom. I think someday, one of these houses would suite me once i move out of here. Its the perfect abode for the never married bachelor!
2 thumbs up!!!!!!!!!
Jay’s great! Also check out yesweecabins.com- very similar (the “East Coast Tumbleweeds” more or less).
