Giving my thanks to you

December 6, 2008

For me, Thanksgiving is more than just a heaping plate. It is more than a major American holiday that precedes a huge shopping day. I really do feel incredibly thankful for all I have — not physical objects, but friends, family, resources, knowledge and intuition. Those are the things that we will need to get us through the hard times ahead.

As the advertising memes of the holiday season work their magic on me, I must remember to not get caught up in the consumer impulses.

  • Reason number 1: I can’t afford it. I need to focus on saving money.
  • Reason number 2: We’re just kidding ourselves.

I can have all the hot, new, energy-efficient gadgets for this imagined “self-sufficient” future… living off the land in the middle of nowhere… But what is this dream of extreme independence? Is it a uniquely American dream?

I want to focus on interdependence instead. We can’t live on an island (unless, that is, we really do live on an island). We all need each other and thanksgiving is a time when we can acknowledge that we, as individuals, are not the sole determinants of our own prosperity.

Anyway, thanks for stopping by and reading my tiny blog today.
