Adventures in Bureaucracy, Part II

My California driver’s license

It was pretty painless, really. I was able to schedule an appointment online with the CA DMV, I arrived on time, and was handed a number just like any jose schmoe in the room. Luckily D16 was called about 10 minutes later. My facilitator of paperwork seemed very friendly, I paid $28.00 and was shuffled along into another line. It was the camera line where I had decided, after so many years of bad ID photos, I was finally going to take a good one. And I did. So there.

Then I was ushered through the blue door, where I was to take my written driver’s exam. Did you know that U turns in residential districts are legal when there are no vehicles approaching nearby? It seems reasonable that I would miss that question — where I come from U turns are simply not okay, as a general rule.

So I passed the exam and my driving test was waived. A few minutes later I was handed a temporary California license, and a new one is to arrive in four to six weeks. All was finished in about an hour. I am reminded that we generally spend more time worrying about The Looming Task than it takes to actually do the task.

And to boot, I registered to vote in this state. It was so nice to see “Green” available as a party affiliation, so I checked that baby off. Yeah.
